Question for Googlers

As several google employees have me as a friend - here's a question for you - www.google.com has suddenly started to think I'm in Spain, and is offering up Spanish results and redirecting me to google.es.

I'm accessing from 195.219.133.128/25 which is very definitely UK address space. Is there a procedure for getting Googles Geo-location fixed?

RIP Edward Lorenz

Edward Lorenz, author of the revolutionary paper "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" in 1972 has died aged 90. His paper put the final nail nail in the coffin of Determinism, and started the Chaos Theory revolution. Incidentally it's also the source of the phrase "the butterfly effect".

Here is a copy of the Lorenz (Butterfly) Attractor.

His obituary from MIT is here.

I can haz more RAM?

My work laptop just got a RAM upgrade, from 1Gb to 2Gb, this seems obscene to me, but then my first PC had an atypically huge 4Mb.

It does seem to make a real difference to the Usability of XP Pro though, especially when I'm not running the dynamips Cisco simulator (the reason for the RAM upgrade in the first place).

PARENT!

When Linnea wakes up in the morning she will generaly do one of two three things, play quietly in her room for a while, go and find us, or call loudly for someone

MUMMY!
or
DADDY!
until someone comes to talk to her.

Today she tried a new variation on this. I was woken by a loud shout of

PARENT!

PARENT!
.

So I got out of bed and went into her room, and she peered at my through the slats on the side of her bunk and pronounced:

"You're the wrong parent"

She accepted my presence however after I explained that mammy was still asleep.

I did find the call of "PARENT! PARENT!" amusing though :-)

Effing Exchange

This morning my Outlook (I have to use it for work email) just decided to sit there saying 'disconnected', and on clicking send and receive would just sit right there doing nothing.

The exchange server is there, outher people are connected to it. I can access my account using outlook web access. Nothing has changed on my laptop since yesterday.

Running traces with Wireshark shows that it is neither trying to send any packets to exchange at all, or doing anything suspect with the domain controlers when I hit send and receieve.

Reboot.

Reboot again.

Have our windows sysadmin look at it.

Reboot again.

Give up and setup an imap account in outlook to access the exchange server (whilst leaving the 'exchange account' alone).

My IMAP work around works just fine. The exchange account is still failed. I don't really care anymore, life is to short to spend hours puzzling out the whys and wherefors of outlook/exchange.

Latest Nigerian Spam

I was mildly amused by this one that found its way into my inbox yesterday:

COMPENSATION FROM THE UNITED NATION

"Mr. Koffi Anan" <info@un.org> to rob

ZENITH BANK COMPENSATION UNIT, IN AFFILIATION WITH THE UNITED NATION.

ATTN: Sir/Madam,
How are you today? Hope all is well with you and family?, you may not understand why this mail came to you. We have been having a meeting for the past seven months, which ended two days ago with the former secretary to the UNITED NATIONS. ...

And continues on with the usual contents. I sometimes dispair at the fact that these things woukd only get sent out if there was at least a few people who actualy respond to them...

Note that this also happens for other vlans and other vrfs, but the exisiting vlan connections seem fine.

Confused of Reading.
